Brainstream Tutoring is seeking professionals, graduate students, and recent graduates who are interested in gaining valuable experience working with student-athletes (SA). We are looking for individuals with strong academic backgrounds that can help with the following duties:
Individually assess each SA in terms of academic strengths and weaknesses.
- Catered each session to each individual student athlete's needs.
Facilitate professional communication skills
- Explicitly model professional email writing/communication skills when needed.
- Strategize with SAs about how to make requests from professors.
- Encourage active participation in class discussions.
Increase reading skills with existing curricular assignments
- Explicitly teach comprehension skills when needed.
- Teach SAs strategies for how to approach new vocabulary words.
- Implement phonological awareness skills to increase decoding skills when needed.
- Identify which specific areas of reading an SA needs help with—decoding, comprehension, lack of background knowledge, working memory?
Increase academic writing skills through existing curricular assignments
- Demonstrate pre-writing strategies such as brainstorming, creating outlines, and other visual supports.
- Identify language that needs to be revised for tone and provide strategies for self-revision.
- Explicitly teach grammatical rules when needed.
- Revise assignments with SAs and identify areas for improvement as well as provide specific feedback on content, organization, and academic tone.
Facilitate academic study skills.
- Informally assess learning styles and figure out which study strategies prove most effective for each SA.

- Ability to manage emotional crisis on occasion.
- Operate from a strengths-based perspective.
- Ability to establish and maintain excellent rapport.
- Create a learning environment where SAs feel comfortable.
- Scheduling flexibility.
- Provide strategies for summarizing and paraphrasing.
- Make specific campus-based referrals such as the communication lab or counseling center.
- Increase confidence in SAs academic skills.
- Create goals with SAs and follow up on them.
Administrative/Communication
- Submit tutoring reports for each session.
- Communicate with academic coordinators regarding progress/concerns
- Respond to emails from academic staff within 24 hours.
